The anti-orange report

This Self Tan Is Purple on Purpose. It’s Why You Won’t Go Orange.

Self tan turns orange because the pigment it makes skews yellow. Bali Body’s Deep Violet Mousse is built the opposite colour on purpose — so you wake up to a deep, cool olive bronze instead. Here’s the colour science, and how to wear it all fall.

There's a specific kind of dread every self-tanner knows, and September brings it back. The summer colour is gone by the second week of school, so you reach for a "natural bronze" self tan — and then comes the moment, the next morning, when you catch your forearm under fluorescent light and realise you are not bronze. You are a Cheeto. Streaky knuckles, orange elbows, a jawline that stops abruptly at the neck. For years the advice was "buy the lightest shade and hope" — which is how so many of us ended up with either no colour at all or the wrong one.

Then the reviews on one product started to read differently. "I'm super pale and I love to look as dark as possible." "Tanners always leave me orange." "Once I came out looking like Shrek." And the ending, over and over: not orange. The product is Bali Body's Deep Violet Self Tanning Mousse — the deepest shade in the brand's range, the first with a violet base, now stocked in more than 1,300 Ulta Beauty stores, and holding a 4.8-star rating across 5,095 reviews on the brand's site. Among those reviewers, 2,173 describe their skin tone as fair — the people every other dark tan had failed.

So we did what any sceptic would do: read them, then pulled apart the formula. Here are the five reasons it works — and the honest caveats.

01Violet cancels orange. Literally.

Every self tan works the same way: DHA reacts with the amino acids in the top layer of your skin and produces brown pigment. The trouble is that the pigment it produces skews yellow-red — the "orange" everyone complains about, and the fairer you are, the more it shows. Most dark tans try to hide that with a green colour guide.

Deep Violet uses a violet base instead. Violet sits directly opposite yellow on the colour wheel, so as the tan develops, the violet neutralises the yellow-orange cast and what's left reads cooler: an olive, chocolate-brown bronze. Bali Body's own FAQ puts it plainly — "Violet counteracts yellow and orange undertones, allowing for a rich, chocolatey tan."

"I have really pale skin so I struggle to find self tans that actually look natural on me, this one does the job. It's super dark but love how the tone of the tan is olive compared to orange."Harriet · Verified buyer · Skin tone: Fair

02You decide how deep it goes — one hour to overnight.

This is the part reviewers keep coming back to. Bali Body's directions give you a window, not a rule: leave it on "anywhere from 1 hour to 8 hours (overnight) depending on your preferred fake tan colour." Rinse at one to three hours for a lighter glow; four hours for a dark tan; sleep in it and rinse at eight for the full chocolate result — then watch it deepen, because the tan keeps developing for up to 24 hours after you rinse.

If you're on the paler side, that window is a built-in safety net. Too light? Leave it longer next time. Nervous? Rinse early and see — several fair-skinned reviewers landed on four to six hours and never looked back.

"I typically wear tanning mousse overnight but with this I tried just 6 hours during the day and rinsed it off. WOW. I look like my own natural tan color — a color I haven't seen in so so long."Lindsey · Verified buyer · Skin tone: Fair

03It's a lightweight mousse that dries fast — and lasts the week.

Bali Body describes it as a lightweight, fast-drying mousse with a streak-free finish, and the reviews agree on the texture: "Application is amazing and it dries down super quickly"; "It dries SO fast, doesn't smell bad and doesn't dry out my skin." Because it's a colour-guide mousse, you can see exactly where it's gone — no guessing on your back or the tops of your feet.

One honest note from the reviews: because it's the deepest shade in the range, it's less forgiving than a lighter tan. Work in sections with a mitt, long sweeping strokes from the ankles up, and glide whatever's left on the mitt over hands and feet last. Do that and the words that come up most are "no streaks", "fades evenly" and "lasted a full week".

04The skincare is doing quiet work underneath.

Dry skin is what makes tans go patchy on elbows, knees and ankles. Deep Violet is made with 100% natural DHA plus shea butter, pomegranate extract and glycerin — Bali Body's words: "to effectively nourish, repair and hydrate skin" — with vitamin A and vitamin E in the mix. In practice that means a more even fade over the up-to-seven days a tan lasts, rather than the crocodile-skin flake-off. It's Australian made in Melbourne, dermatologically and clinically tested, and formulated for all skin types including sensitive skin.

05It's in Ulta, and the reviews say what the ads can't.

Deep Violet Mousse is stocked in more than 1,300 Ulta Beauty locations and on Amazon, but the brand's own site is where the reviews live: 5,095 of them at 4.8 stars, 96% of reviewers saying they'd recommend it, and fair skin the second-largest group after medium. The recurring themes are the same three words — not orange, no streaks, lasts a week — and an unusual number of "I'll never buy another self tanner" endings.

"I have tried so many fake tan and spray tan and they always leave me orange... This is the first tan where I've had people think this is a real tan. It is dark, does not smell and I just absolutely love it. I will be using this for my wedding."Carmen G. · Verified buyer · Skin tone: Fair

The honest caveats

It's the deepest shade in the range. Bali Body says it's best suited to medium complexions and experienced tanners — so if you're fair, use one thin coat and rinse at the early end of the window (1–3 hours) the first time, then go longer once you trust it. It's not a one-hour tan. You rinse anywhere from one to eight hours later — four for a dark result, overnight for the deepest; if you need it done in an hour, Bali Body's Deep Violet 1-Hour Express exists. And there is a faint self-tan scent while it develops — reviewers rate scent 4.4 out of 5, and a surprising number say it's the first tan that doesn't smell like one.

If you've been burned (metaphorically) by orange tans, the maths for this fall is simple: a violet base, a rinse window you control, and a mousse that lasts the week. Start early in the window. Go longer once you trust it. Three bottles is roughly 18–24 coats — one every Sunday from now until New Year's — and if it isn't the most natural tan you've ever had, the Glow Guarantee refunds it.

The colour science

Why violet is the anti-orange

Self tan turns orange because the pigment DHA creates skews yellow-red — and the fairer the skin, the more it shows. Violet sits directly opposite yellow on the colour wheel, so a violet base cancels the cast as your tan develops, and what's left reads cooler: an olive, chocolate bronze instead of brass. It's Bali Body's first violet-based tan, and the deepest shade in the range.

Formula, explained

Five things in the mousse. Zero orange.

Keep scrolling — every ingredient has one job, and each job is why the tan reads olive, not orange.

01 of 05

100% natural DHA

The tanning agent

01

100% natural DHA

The tanning agent · Dermatologically & clinically tested

Dihydroxyacetone is the sugar-derived molecule behind every self tan. It doesn't dye the skin — it reacts with the amino acids in the very top layer to form brown pigments, the same browning reaction that toasts bread. Bali Body's is 100% natural, and the formula is dermatologically and clinically tested.

For fair skin: on its own, DHA's pigment skews yellow-red — which is exactly why this formula pairs it with a violet base
02

Violet base

Colour guide · Counteracts yellow & orange

Violet sits directly opposite yellow-orange on the colour wheel. As the tan develops, the violet base cancels that warm cast, so the pigment reads cooler: olive and chocolate rather than brass. In Bali Body's words, "violet counteracts yellow and orange undertones, allowing for a rich, chocolatey tan."

For fair skin: the violet shows as a cool guide colour while it develops, then rinses away — no green tinge
03

Shea butter

Plant butter · Nourish, repair & hydrate

A rich plant butter Bali Body includes "to effectively nourish, repair and hydrate skin". Well-conditioned skin takes colour more evenly and holds it longer — the difference between a tan that fades gracefully over the week and one that flakes.

For fair skin: softer elbows, knees and ankles — the zones that go dark and patchy first
04

Pomegranate extract

Rich in vitamin C · Antioxidant

"Rich in vitamin C for a youthful glow and anti-aging benefits," per Bali Body. Antioxidants help protect skin from the everyday oxidative stress that dulls it — so the bronze underneath looks lit from within rather than flat.

For fair skin: a brighter, more even base under the colour
05

Glycerin

Humectant · The hydration base

Glycerin is a humectant: it draws water into the surface of the skin and holds it there. Hydrated skin is what stops tan grabbing on dry zones, and Bali Body pairs it with vitamin A and vitamin E in the formula. It's why a fast-drying mousse can still leave skin feeling soft, not tight.

For fair skin: an even fade that lasts the week, not tiger-bread

Questions

Everything people ask first

Will it turn me orange? I'm really pale.
That's exactly what the violet base is for. Orange happens when the pigment DHA creates skews yellow-red, most visibly on fair skin; violet sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel and neutralises it as the tan develops, leaving a cooler olive-brown. Bali Body says Deep Violet is best suited to medium complexions and experienced tanners because it's the deepest shade in the range — but 2,173 of its reviewers describe their skin as fair, and "not orange" is the phrase they use most. If you're fair: one thin coat, rinse at the early end of the window (1–3 hours) the first time, then go longer once you trust it.
What is the Glow Guarantee?
Wear it once. If it isn't the most natural tan you've ever had, tell Bali Body within 30 days of delivery and you'll get a refund of what you paid for the tan — no return shipping, no forms. It applies to your first order of Deep Violet Mousse through this page (US orders, one per household, up to one 3-bottle bundle). Read the guarantee.
Is it worth self-tanning in fall?
Summer colour fades first on fair skin. A Sunday-night coat once a week is the lowest-effort way to keep a natural bronze through sweater season — and the violet base gives a cooler chocolate-olive tone that sits far better against fall neutrals than a summery orange. Three bottles is 18–24 coats, which is every Sunday from now until New Year's.
How long do I leave it on?
Bali Body's answer: "anywhere from 1 hour to 8 hours (overnight) depending on your preferred fake tan colour." Rinse at 1–3 hours for a lighter glow, at 4 hours for a dark tan, or sleep in it and rinse at 8 for the deepest result. After you rinse, the colour keeps developing for up to 24 hours. Not sure? Take the 60-second develop-time quiz.
How does Buy 2, Get 1 Free work?
Choose the 3-bottle option and the code VIOLET3 is added to your Shopify checkout automatically — you'll see one bottle discounted to $0 in the order summary, and the Luxe Tanning Mitt comes free with code VIOLETMITT. The 2-bottle option applies VIOLET2 (15% off). Codes can't be combined with other promotions.
Does it transfer onto clothes or sheets?
It's a lightweight, fast-drying mousse — reviewers say it "dries down super quickly". If you sleep in it, do what the pros do: loose dark clothes, older sheets, and don't get it wet before you rinse. Guide-colour transfer washes out, and many reviewers report minimal transfer overnight.
How long does the tan last, and how many uses per bottle?
Up to 7 days — hydration is the key to a long-lasting, even fade. One bottle gives approximately 6–8 full-body coats, so three bottles is roughly a season of weekly tans. Want it darker? Bali Body says you can layer: 1–3 coats per application.
Can I use it on my face?
Bali Body recommends a face-specific formula for the face and neck. Face Tan Milk is a skincare-infused daily face tan (93% skincare ingredients, non-comedogenic) that builds a natural glow with each use — you can add it to your order in the box above.
What's in it?
100% natural DHA with shea butter, pomegranate extract and glycerin, plus vitamin A and vitamin E. Proudly Australian made in Melbourne, 100% cruelty-free and Leaping Bunny approved, dermatologically and clinically tested, and suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin.
Deep Violet or Ultra Dark — which one?
Both are deep. Bali Body's original Ultra Dark Mousse is green-based; Deep Violet is violet-based and gives a richer, olive pay-off. The brand's rule of thumb: naturally yellow undertone (or a history of going orange) — Violet. Naturally red undertone — Ultra Dark.
